Publishing is a sequence of decisions.

From a finished manuscript to a usable eBook or print file, each stage has its own technical and editorial requirements.

Editorial and design preparation

The first step is to assess the manuscript and clarify its intended audience, language, formats and stage of completion. That determines whether editorial work or technical preparation should come next.

Editing and proofreading are not the same task. Editing addresses structure, clarity or consistency; proofreading concentrates on remaining language and typographical errors in the prepared text.

Review before release.

Proof copies, device previews and metadata checks are less expensive to fix before publication than after a title is already on sale.

Distribution is more than an upload

For print, trim size, margins, page numbering, image resolution and cover dimensions must match the printer’s specifications. A proof copy is important because screen previews do not show every problem.

For eBooks, chapters, navigation, headings, links and images must behave across different reading devices. A fixed-looking PDF is not a substitute for a correctly prepared reflowable eBook.

Support built around each title

Before release, title, subtitle, contributor names, format, language, categories and description should be checked for consistency across files and sales listings.

Not every project needs every service. The work should be divided into defined tasks with clear approvals, rather than described as an unlimited all-inclusive package.
